(FUN WITH KIDS)

Egg Grass Grower

With an empty eggshell, you can grow grass!

First, carefully break the top off of the eggshell. You want an opening large enough to pour soil into. An uneven top is OK. If it takes you a few eggs to get a fairly clean break, that's ok! Just empty out the egg(s) and use it for cooking, or use a hard-boiled egg and eat it carefully!

Next, fill the egg nearly to the top with potting soil. Soil from the garden will work, but will tend to compact quickly and may carry weeds.

Once your shell is filled with soil, sprinkle some grass seeds on it. You can get grass seed cheap at most garden centers. Herb seeds and even wheat will work ok, but they may grow a little more slowly.

Gently wet the soil.

Finally, keep the soil moist over the next few days. This usually means just checking once a day that the soil is not dry.

You can carefully decorate the eggshells with markers. Faces are fun, because the faces will grow their own hair!

There are various ways to keep your eggshells upright. Napkin rings make effective bases. Sand, grain, or beans can be piled in a small dish to make an easy base for the shells as well.

This activity is great for children for several reasons. They learn about delayed gratification over the few days they need to wait. They also get to see the miracle of small, lifeless-looking seeds growing into live plants. Finally, it's silly fun to see an egg face grow its own hair!
